    whatbecause

The 30 second increment operates the whole game, players get an extra 30 minutes at move 40. Bobby achieved his second (I think) IM norm in this tournament with TRP over 2700.

Chess.com is to be congratulated for putting this event in the news. Incredibly, Chessbase has ignored this event entirely in spite of a German GM playing in it!! I think that that sums up Chessbase as a company: selfish, ignorant and insular.

Bobby Cheng won 3[!] awards actually. He won the Australian Open [classic time control] , the Australian Open lightning [held as a rest day in the classic] and the best junior[!] player. He was also tired from travelling from a chess event in New Zealand, so he had to concede a 1/2 point bye in round one!

I read on a chess forum that Cheng's Tournament Performance rating was astonishing - about 2770!!!!!!!!

He has the chess world at his feet. His only barrier, surely, to being a 2700 FIDE GM is whether other things in life such as school infringe upon that. That's a decision that only he can make.

    What an achievement!
