php7pES6g.jpegThe 48th Capablanca Memorial took place in Havana, Cuba from 20 April - 1 May (exactly the same dates as the Alekhine Memorial!).

The Hungarian grandmaster Zoltan Almasi (pictured) took first place in the 6-player double round-robin Elite section with 6½/10, half a point ahead of the two Cuban competitors Yuniesky Quesada Perez and Leinier Dominguez Perez.

It was an excellent result for Almasi, which takes his live rating back above 2700 Elo.

The winner Almasi lost what looks like a drawn rook ending in the game against Quesada Perez -- instead of 49.Rxc3 immediately, perhaps 49.Kf2 first would have worked, e.g., 49...c2 50.Rc1 Rxd6 51.Rxc2, and this is already an easy draw.

Or two moves later, instead of 51.Kg1 (which confined his king to the first rank and made the rest of the game trivial for black to execute) perhaps 51.Kf3 Rxh2 52.Rc6 would at least require some serious endgame technique by black, if that endgame can be won at all (which I am not sure).

To his credit, Almasi came back and won two in a row in the subsequent rounds, both with black!  So he deserves his award!
