Caruana Wins Zurich Blitz Event

Zurich Chess Challenge logo 2013.jpgFabiano Caruana won an opening double-round robin blitz competition on the eve of the Zurich Chess Challenge, just beating Vladimir Kramnik in the final standings.

The blitz contest came as something of a surprise since there were no hints on the official website that it was even taking place!

A further surprise was the poor showing of world champion Vishy Anand, who is normally known for his prowess at rapid and blitz chess. Despite beating Boris Gelfand in their head-to-head mini-match, he lost all his other games to finish last. The time control was 4 minutes plus 2 second increment.

The final results of the Zurich Blitz competition

Interestingly, with a round to spare in the actual main tournament, the players still  the identical spots to where they ended this blitz event -- with Caruana on top, Anand at the bottom, and the other two in the middle.  Though the differences in classical chess and in points accumulated are ever so subtle unlike here in the blitz event.

It looks like Anand lost at least two of his games on time (white against Kramnik, and black against Caruana); but was doing reasonably okay in them up to that point chess-wise.  So this isn't something to worry about, he's just gotten slower in moving his hands, but his brain is sharp still.

I'm happy to see that Kortchnoi was there! I'm really happy he is recovering from the stroke.

I'm sorry, but the first picture really shouldn't be posted here. It's quite horrible. They look like a bunch of mentally disordered guys

    They are just "special" ;)

I'd say Blitz favours younger players because of their impulsive nature

Board blindness probably, and I'm guessing Anand resigned immediately after...

Gooo Caruana! I was hoping it would be Kramnik, but Caruana was my next bet :)
