Baden-Baden tournament logo.jpgFabiano Caruana opened with a win in the first round of the Grenke Chess Classic in Baden-Baden.

The Italian-American won a fine game against Georg Meier to take an early lead in this 6-player double round-robin competition.

World Champion Vishy Anand had to tread carefully to earn a draw against an in-form Mickey Adams, while the game between Arkadij Naiditsch and Daniel Fridman was a hard-fought draw.

Yes SerbianChesStar, of course. Indeed Caruana achieved a rating of about 2780 by the end of last year by playing  weak tournaments like Dortmund and Bilbao masters where he could beat all those low rated players such as Carlsen, Karjakin, Aronian, Kramnik...

This is in no way a weak tournament and faulting a chess player for going to a tournament and playing chess is ridiculous.

Didn't Naka once say Caruana joins weaker tournaments to gain rating off the low rated players?

He was sure right.. always losing rating at big tournaments (Tata steel for example).

@_valentin_: I agree. There's a tendency to look at "1/2 - 1/2" results and pass over the game. I thought Anand might have gotten more out of the bishop vs knight situation, but it just wasn't there. In fact, just like Monday-morning quarterbacking, some wood-pushers like me have a tendency to second-guess GMs. Ridiculous, I know, but I thought maybe white could have tried 29.Qe7, or the even crazier 29.g4. Anyway, I hope Caruana can bounce back from recent mess at Tata. He's off to a good start, and I still say he looks like Charousek!

Indeed, a very interesting game between Adams and Anand -- the draw came as a logical conclusion, and the rich play was there, so those who only look at the final result to declare that "Anand made another draw" really need to look carefully at the actual game.

I watched the Adam's vs. Anand match and I have to admit that it was the most brilliant and exciting draw I had seen in quite a while.  Great game.
